WHY DOES HAIR LOSS OR THINNING HAPPEN?

Hair loss, for both men and women, is mostly caused by genetics in the form of pattern baldness or thinning with age. Diseases like anemia, lupus, thyroid disorders and alopecia areata are also prevalent when patients have their hair and scalp analyzed.

There is also a major external cause for hair loss and thinning that can be prevented, which very few people even know about. The medical term is ‘traction alopecia’ but you may know it simply as ‘tight braids or ponytails’ because the hairstyle pulls out your hair from too much tension. This is proven to destroy hair, slowly over your lifespan, one strand at a time. As you might imagine, this is most commonly happening to women with long hair who like to wear it up.

Historically, those suffering from hair loss would seek a hair transplant that involves surgical replacement. In recent years another process, called regenerative hair restoration, has been introduced to the public. Typically that involves something called ‘PRP’ where blood is taken from the patient, then a centrifuge is used to concentrate platelets, which are injected back into the scalp with a syringe. This can be painful and unsightly, with inconsistent applications, because each injection is governed by the hand eye coordination of the therapist. Sometimes it can be too deep, or not deep enough, into the scalp. This type of PRP application via syringe can also cause inflammation which is damaging to your hair.
